A Letter to Parents

Your child speaks English at school. They watch cartoons in English. Their friends text in English.

But the stories of their grandmother — the tatsuniya, the àlọ́, the akụkọ iro, the taali — are fading.

Dandali is a small app with a single, stubborn goal: to keep the language of home alive in the ears of the next generation. Not as a lesson, or a flashcard, or a chore — but as a story their parents wanted them to hear.

Four languages · more coming

A story deserves the language it was born in.

Every folktale, proverb, and riddle on Dandali is written, voiced, and reviewed by native speakers. No machine translations. No pan-African blur.

How we build a story

AI helps. Humans decide. A parent signs off last.

We don’t hide the pipeline. Every folktale passes through these five hands before it reaches your child.

  1. Step 01

    A cultural brief.

Our content team scopes each folktale, proverb, or riddle in partnership with native speakers — choosing which stories children of this generation most need to hear, and in which language they should be told.

  2. Step 02

    AI drafts. Humans rewrite.

GPT-4 drafts the first pass. Every line is then read, corrected, and often rewritten by a native speaker — for idiom, tone, and the small linguistic turns that no model can invent.

  3. Step 03

A real voice, not a synthetic one.

Our narration voices are trained on real storytellers who have given consent — so your child hears a person, with a person’s warmth, not a robot trying to approximate it.

  4. Step 04

    Illustrations refined by hand.

DALL-E 3 generates the first sketches. Our illustrators then refine them for cultural accuracy — the right cloth, the right architecture, the right kinds of trees — before they appear in the app.

  5. Step 05

    A parent signs off last.

Before any story reaches a child’s device, a parent on our team reads it, listens to it, and approves it. No shortcut ever skips this step.

Why we built it

A letter from the people making this.

I grew up listening to my grandmother tell tatsuniya by kerosene lamp. When my own children started school, I realised none of those stories were being passed down the way she had passed them to me. The tape was breaking.

Dandali is our answer. Not a replacement for grandmothers — nothing is — but a place where the stories can live, in the right languages, narrated by people who grew up speaking them, and available whenever a family needs them.

We’re a small team: four contributors across four language communities, plus writers, illustrators, and parents who test every release. If you use Dandali and it feels like home, that’s the point.
